Sita Sunil is an artist and composer whose work spans from musicals, paintings, soundtracks, and everything in between. Some of the common themes in her work include nature, community, and harmony between sound and color. Her work often originates from pictures and noises that pop into her head and explore how to make sense of the things we experience around us. She is now working on several projects including a folk tapestry painting series, new musicals and soundtrack compositions, and a project exploring making art and music around natural and sustainable materials. Sita is based in New York City.

More about Sita:

Sita Sunil is an Indian-American artist, composer, and writer born in West Virginia and based in New York City.

Influenced by her fulfilling study of both evolutionary biology and visual art at Yale University, Sunil’s art is rooted in the intersection of color, sound, emotion, nature, and Asian-American identity. Her striking watercolor, acrylic, and mixed-media paintings comprise joyful rendering of a blend of subjects including wildlife, dreams, landscapes, and her practice of meditation.

In addition to the visual arts, Sunil is an experienced music composer and songwriter; she developed her composition skillset with Rebecca Cherian of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra from 2015-2018. She has composed for short films, concert performances, and soundtracks. Sunil co-composed Illegal: A New Musical with Chinese-American playwright Skyler Chin. Illegal was recently named a semifinalist for the Eugene O’Neill National Music Theater Conference, was commended by US Congresswoman Grace Meng, NY Assemblywoman Gina Silletti, and Senator Anna Kaplan for responding to anti-AAPI hate crimes via art, and Illegal has kicked off an exciting season of live performances in 2022.
